Setting Up A Farm

Before setting up your own hobby farm, take a look at these 7 key points.

1- You will find farming and maybe even making money a lot easier if you have some experience in farming. For example, if you want to start up a plant nursery, you would be advised to have had some experience in helping out at a nursery and being involved in its operation.

2- Take a look at your land for its suitability and potential. If you have enough knowledge of ground quality then check yours but if not, get a professional in to do it. An expert may also be able to tell you how you can make use of existing buildings and possible investments you should make. If, on the off chance, you want to raise cattle or maybe just some chickens then you will need to add the right fencing to keep them safe. You may also want to start thinking about how you are going to keep your land maintained as livestock cause compaction and erosion of land.

3- Prepare shelter for livestock. Make sure shelter is insulated in order for your animals to be kept cool in summer and warm in winter. All animals require protection from the elements from when they are young to when they grow older.

4- An immediate water source is essential. It may be advised to have a natural or man made pond on your land but if this is not possible, stock tanks with anti-freeze mechanisms will also do the job.

5- Make sure you have adequate storage facilities in which you need to keep your tools, vehicles, farm equipment and animal feed.

6- Acquire a vehicle. In order to get around and transport equipment and materials, a compact tractor is a great purchase to consider. Compact Tractors Somerset have a lot of compact tractors on offer and can give you lots of good advice.

7- Know the laws relating to small farms or farming and general. Find out the maximum number of animals you can keep on a plot the size of yours.

For any more information or to get hold of any farming equipment that you may require, get in touch with your local farming specialists.
